Stefan Pluess is a Swiss artist living and working in Gordola, near Locarno, Switzerland.
Born in Zurich in 1968, he became an art director in 1989 after four years of study. At the age of 20, he opened his first studio, and since 1999 he has worked as a full-time artist.
His abstract, contemporary black-and-white paintings explore the miracle of nature – patterns, textures, and structures in the eternal cycle of emergence and decay. Over the years, he has developed his own unique painting technique, inviting the viewer to dive deep into the artwork and explore the universe behind it.
The paint he uses is handmade from the remains of fire: black charcoal and white ash, produced in his self-built wood stove, which reaches high temperatures to create fine, clean ash. These materials are blended with other natural components and clear acrylic emulsion to create a durable paint that will never fade – a medium made from burned organic matter.
His working process is quiet and meditative. He follows his intuition – “the hardest thing to do,” as he says.
“Let the spirit of nature flow through your body, and listen to what it’s telling you.”
Stefan has exhibited his work in numerous solo and group shows in Switzerland and abroad.
Each painting is absolutely unique and cannot be reproduced. All works are signed, dated, numbered on the back, and ready to hang.
